Whether it's your first wax or your fiftieth, what you do before and after your appointment makes all the difference between silky-smooth skin and post-wax irritation. Our expert esthetician at Kattymooneyes shares her essential guide.

    Preparing for Your Waxing Appointment

Preparation is half the battle when it comes to waxing. The right prep routine reduces discomfort, allows the wax to grip hair more effectively, and minimizes your risk of post-wax reactions.

    Hair Length Matters

Hair should be at least 1/4 inch long — roughly the length of a grain of rice — before your appointment. Too short and the wax won't grip properly; too long and the process becomes more uncomfortable. If you've been shaving, stop at least 2–3 weeks before your first wax appointment.

    Exfoliate 24–48 Hours Before

Gentle exfoliation removes dead skin cells that can trap hairs and cause ingrowns. Use a mild scrub or exfoliating glove in circular motions, but stop at least 24 hours before your appointment so skin isn't sensitized on the day.

    Skip These on Appointment Day

    Heavy moisturizers or body oils

    Self-tanner or spray tan

    Retinol or AHA/BHA products

    Sun exposure or tanning beds

    Caffeine and alcohol (increases sensitivity)

Tight clothing over the waxed area

What to Expect During Your Wax

At Kattymooneyes, we use high-quality hard and soft waxes chosen specifically for different areas of the body. Hard wax is gentler on sensitive areas like the bikini line and face, while soft wax is ideal for larger areas like legs and arms.

Expect some discomfort — especially on your first appointment. Subsequent sessions are noticeably less painful as hair grows back finer and sparser over time. Our esthetician works quickly and efficiently to minimize discomfort.

Post-Wax Aftercare: The First 48 Hours

Your skin is temporarily more vulnerable after waxing — follicles are open and skin may be slightly inflamed. During the first 48 hours:

Apply a soothing post-wax lotion or aloe vera gel

Helps calm redness and close the follicles faster.

    Wear loose, breathable clothing

Reduces friction on freshly waxed skin.

Take a cool or lukewarm shower

Hot water can cause further irritation to open follicles.

Avoid swimming pools and hot tubs

Chlorine and bacteria can enter open follicles and cause infections.

    Skip the gym

Sweat and friction are a recipe for post-wax breakouts.

    No exfoliation for 48 hours

Skin is already sensitized — wait before resuming your routine.

    Preventing Ingrown Hairs

Ingrown hairs are the most common post-waxing concern. They occur when hair grows back into the skin instead of out of the follicle. Prevent them by:

    • Exfoliating 2–3 times per week starting 3 days after your wax
    • Moisturizing daily with a lightweight, non-comedogenic lotion
    • Using an ingrown hair serum with salicylic acid on problem-prone areas
    • Staying on a regular waxing schedule — consistent clients experience fewer ingrowns over time

    Waxing Schedule: How Often?

For best results, we recommend waxing every 4–6 weeks. This aligns with your natural hair growth cycle. Over time, regular waxing weakens the hair follicle, resulting in finer, sparser regrowth that's easier to manage and less uncomfortable to remove.
